David Monllor, geboren 1987 in Aarau/Schweiz,lebt und arbeitet in Schönenwerd/Schweiz.
Als Autodidakt entdeckte David Monllor früh seine Faszination für die figurative Malerei.
Bereits im Alter von zwölf Jahren kam er mit der Graffiti-Subkultur in Berührung.
Nach ersten Ausstellungen verlagerte sich sein künstlerischer Fokus:
Die Sprühdose wich dem Pinsel. Seit 2012 widmet er sich der altmeisterlichen Ölmalerei.

Monllors aktuelles Werk dokumentiert und reflektiert seine unmittelbare Lebensumgebung im schweizerischen Mittelland.
Dabei spielt er mit der Farbigkeit und zeigt die Dinge, wie sie in der Realität naturgemäß nicht wahrgenommen werden können.
Es entsteht ein Realismus des Latenten: Mit den Mitteln der Malerei dringt der Künstler in das Sichtbare ein, um das Unsichtbare zum Leben zu erwecken.
Das zentrale Interesse Monllors gilt dem Licht. In Anlehnung an den französischen Impressionismus versteht er Farbe als Licht und bearbeitet Themen wie unterschiedliche Wetterlagen sowie tageszeitliche Aspekte. Im Unterschied zu den Impressionisten jedoch meint die Nacht bei Monllor mehr als nur eine Tageszeit; sie fungiert im metaphorischen Sinne als Chiffre für das Verborgene, das Unbewusste. Oft wirken seine Szenen wie Filmstills, eingefrorene Momentaufnahmen.
Der Betrachtende wird in eine hintergründige Dramatik hineingezogen, und so erscheinen die Bilder nur vordergründig menschenleer.
Letztlich ist Monllors Thema stets der Mensch selbst, der in der Bildbetrachtung auf sich zurückgeworfen wird und im „Dunkel des gelebten Augenblicks“ (Ernst Bloch) erahnt, dass „das Bekannte noch lange nicht das Erkannte ist“ (G. W. F. Hegel).
Monllors Werk wurde im Rahmen von über 60 Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen in Galerien, Museen und auf Messen in Europa und den USA gezeigt.

David Monllor, born in 1987 in Aarau /Switzerland, lives and works in Schönenwerd /Switzerland.
As a self-taught artist, David Monllor developed an early fascination with figurative painting. At the age of twelve, he came into contact with the graffiti subculture. Following his first exhibitions, his artistic focus shifted: the spray can gave way to the brush. Since 2012, he has been devoted to the practice of Old Master oil painting.

Monllor’s current work documents and reflects his immediate living environment in the Swiss Midlands. He plays with colour and presents things in ways that cannot be perceived as such in natural reality. What emerges is a realism of the latent: through the means of painting, the artist penetrates the visible in order to bring the invisible to life.
At the core of Monllor’s practice is his interest in light. In reference to French Impressionism, he understands colour as light and addresses themes such as varying weather conditions and different times of day. Unlike the Impressionists, however, night in Monllor’s work signifies more than a time of day; it functions metaphorically as a cipher for the hidden and the unconscious.
His scenes often resemble film stills—frozen moments in time. The viewer is drawn into an underlying dramatic tension, and thus the images appear only superficially devoid of human presence.
Ultimately, Monllor’s subject is always the human being, who, in the act of viewing, is thrown back upon themselves and senses, in the “darkness of the lived moment” (Ernst Bloch), that “the familiar is far from being fully known” (G. W. F. Hegel).
Monllor’s work has been presented in over 60 group and solo exhibitions in galleries, museums, and art fairs across Europe and the United States.
